The fur industry consists of a long chain of players and events, starting on the fur farm and ending in a beautiful garment.
Before reaching the end consumer, fur pelts pass through fur skin buyers and brokers at international fur auction houses, dressers, designers, manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers. The hours of skilled handiwork throughout every stage of this process are the major component in the final cost of a fur garment.
In all, it takes about one full year from the time breeders send their pelts to auction, until a finished fur garment is ready for the consumer.
While fur farming and the infrastructure surrounding it are primarily local and national in scope, the fur industry as a whole is global, generating employment and prosperity in all parts of the world.
While two thirds of the world's fur production is concentrated in rural areas of northern European countries, fur skins and finished garments are processed, manufactured, and sold all over the world.
